Flag Patrol is an opportunity for students to take part in raising and lowering the US and SC flags each school day. Members are recommended for participation by their teachers. Flag patrol members are trained on how to properly raise and lower the flag, as well as how to fold the flag for storage. Mrs. Allie (Student Support Facilitator) acts as the flag patrol advisor.


RESPECTING OUR FLAG

Safety Patrol members are expected to honor and respect our country's flag, and will participate in raising, lowering, and folding the flag during their time of service.  Although they have been initially trained in these steps, they are welcome and encouraged to review them below at any time.

Time and occasions for display of the flag:

These are some basic rules for raising and lowering the US flag. The most important rule to remember is to always treat the US flag with dignity and respect. It is the symbol of the United States of America. Remember that many men and women have given their lives defending the liberty and freedom it represents.

Raising and Lowering the United States Flag:

Raising the flag

  • The flag should be hoisted quickly, but steadily.
  • The flag should be flown at the top of the flagpole, unless the flag is being flown at half staff.
  • If you are flying the flag at half staff, raise the flag all the way to the top of the pole and then lower it to halfway between the top and the bottom of the flagpole.

Lowering the flag

  • The flag should be lowered slowly, with dignity.
  • If the flag was flying at half staff, raise the flag all the way to the top of the flagpole and then lower it.
  • Fold the flag correctly before storing it (see video above).

Notes

  • Don’t let the flag touch the ground.  It should not touch anything underneath it.
  • Normally the flag is flown from sunrise to sunset. If flown at night, it must be illuminated. Our flag petrol members will lower the flag each day before dismissal.
